OKLAHOMA CERTIFIED HEALTHY BUSINESS
What is an Oklahoma Certified Healthy Business?
The Oklahoma Certified Healthy Business program recognizes Oklahoma businesses that provide health and wellness opportunities and are working to improve the health status of Oklahomans. The program is a joint effort of the Oklahoma Academy for State Goals, the Oklahoma Turning Point Council, the State Chamber of Commerce, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health. To be certified, businesses must meet specific criteria, including providing employee health screenings, workplace health and nutrition educations, opportunities for physical exercise activities, management support for healthy workplace environments, tobacco use prevention activities, and sharing wellness activities within their respective communities.
The program was initiated in 2003 and currently has certified 383 businesses through 2007 in the state of Oklahoma. The 2008 application form will be available in August at www.okturningpoint.org, with applications due in November.
Healthy Business Academy
The Healthy Business Academy offers a two-prong strategy: practical employee wellness program training and Certified Healthy Business application guidance. The Academy introduces new aspects of employee wellness plans each quarter through luncheon classes from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. held at Moore Norman Technology Center. These classes bring a mix of discussions, group policy creation, question/answer sessions, and brainstorming using the Make It Your Business for a Strong and Healthy Oklahoma Toolkit. At least one participant per class will give an overview of their company’s employee wellness program. Homework may include reading assignments, worksheets, or preparing for classroom discussions. Participants are asked to bring a copy of their company’s policy handbook to each session. The Healthy Business Academy is sponsored by Norman Regional Health System and the Healthy Community Coalition.
