National Deaf Awareness Week Recognized at MNTC

Moore Norman Technology Center will formally recognize National Deaf Awareness Week Sept. 21-27. In honor of the week, MNTC's Deaf Leadership Club will host an event starting at 9 a.m. on Sept. 23 in the Franklin Road Campus' North Cafeteria. Attendees have the opportunity to visit information booths and experience an "unfair hearing test" which gives a general idea of what a hard of hearing person "hears."

There will also be a "See-aSong" event where attendees may watch a variety of songs performed in American Sign Language. Additionally, Oklahoma mixed martial arts and CS fighter Tracy Willis will be available at 9:30 a.m. to take photos and sign authographs. Willis is a former student of MNTC who is deaf. Willis will also have T-shirts for sale for $20 that will help him on his way to the UFC. Willis has a 9-0 record in Oklahoma, and a 4-0 semi-pro record, and is setting his sights on a Heavyweight championship.

Other events MNTC's Deaf & Hard of Hearing students and instructors will be involved in are the Jane Seymour Integris Women's forum this Saturday night, where MNTC instructors DeAnn Martin and Suzanne Graham will interpret. Martin will also interpret the National Anthem at the University of Oklahoma versus Texas Christian University game on Sept. 27 in Norman. The MNTC program is also working on a date to conduct an emergency management training session for the deaf with the Norman Police Academy.
