MNTC Instructor Announced as Winner in State Educator Contest
An instructor at Moore Norman Technology Center was recently selected as the first place winner in a statewide lesson plans contest.
The Oklahoma Society of Certified Public Accountants notified MNTC Accounting Instructor Charlotte Burnham when her entry in the fourth-annual Lessons Enhancing Accounting Development (LEAD) contest won first place. Burnham submitted “The Percent Guru” as her lesson plan. The project is designed to teach the concept of solving business problems using percentages as well as promote teamwork between the students.
“In order to succeed in the business office, a person should learn to work comfortably with percentages,” Burnham said. “Also, working with a partner helps develop the student’s ability to work as a member of a team. Regardless of the area of business students may want to pursue, teamwork will be essential.”
As the first place winner, Burnham will receive a $500 award and Moore Norman Technology Center will receive a $200 award to be used in Burnham’s department. This is Burnham’s third time to enter the LEAD contest and her second time winning first prize. “I was thrilled to find out I won first place in this contest,” Burnham said. “This is a great program because it isn’t time consuming to enter and it recognizes and encourages teachers to be creative in the classroom.”
The contest, conducted by the Accounting Careers Committee of the OSCPA, was created to encourage educators to share best practices for teaching accounting, business, economics and personal finance lessons. Lesson Plans from entrants are available in the “Educators” section at www.oscpa.com.
