MNTC Nancy Liner Memorial Scholarship Awarded

Moore Norman Technology Center Accounting student Rachelle Lagunes was awarded the Nancy Liner Accounting Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship recognizes an outstanding student studying Accounting in the areas of academics and overall leadership.

The Nancy Liner Scholarship is presented in memory of Nancy Liner, a former Accounting instructor at MNTC. She was diagnosed with cancer, but continued to teach. Her passion for her students is reflected in the criteria for choosing the scholarship recipient. Before her death in 1987, she asked for the scholarship to be set up.

Lagunes She is a member of the Business Professionals of America student organization, and recently competed in a district contest where she placed fourth in the Accounting division. She has earned 11 bookkeeping, computer software, and business-related certifications while in the Accounting Program, was also selected Norman Kiwanis Club Student of the Month in March, and inducted into the National Technical Honor Society in April. She is earning 12 hours of college credit toward an associate degree at Oklahoma City Community College through a cooperative alliance agreement, and graduated this month.

She found out about the program through her mother, who had been enrolled previously. “I had finished high school and wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go in terms of a career. I went with my mom to her Accounting class one day to see what it was like and came away knowing I just had to enroll,” she said.

Accounting Instructor Charlotte Burnham said, “Rachelle is motivated, pleasant and very hard-working student who enjoys learning and was such a pleasure to have in class each day. I know she’ll be successful no matter where she goes.”

To be considered for the scholarship, the nominee must be finishing their last semester of the Accounting program at MNTC and plan to enter the field directly from the program, or continue their education in a business-related field. The nominees must actively participate in class and club activities, demonstrate leadership skills and show the willingness and ability to help other students. Additionally they must display a positive attitude toward their instructors, fellow students, class guidelines and the school as a whole and be able to handle difficult situations. A committee of business instructors and professionals review the candidates’ nominations and make their selection.  The winner’s name is placed on a plaque in the Accounting program class, as well as a check for the amount of the fund's interest and a printed award.
