Norman Kiwanis Club Honors Students Of The Month

The Norman Kiwanis Club recognized one adult and one high school student as April Students of the Month from Moore Norman Technology Center. They represent full-time programs in the Health Careers and the Business Information Technology study areas.

Heather McCracken is a Westmoore High School senior and student in MNTC’s Accounting program. She is a member of the Business Professionals of America student organization, and is a member of the Superintendent’s Leadership Class. She also serves as vice president of the MNTC Deaf Leadership Club. McCracken is also a student in the Deaf & Hard of Hearing program at MNTC, and was named Miss Deaf Oklahoma, 2007. This spring she competed in the Financial Math & Analysis and Fundamental Accounting categories in the BPA district competition.

She said she discovered her true career interest in business and micro-computer operations while enrolled in her MNTC program. She said she feels that as a student at MNTC she can expect high quality teaching in a school with a solid understanding of her needs. She said the program ensures her studies are relevant, up-to-date and challenging. After graduation this May, she looks to pursue a degree at Oklahoma State University starting this fall.

“My favorite things about MNTC are the Deaf & Hard of Hearing Program and that I’m able to earn college credit while I’m still in high school.”

Karla Ostorga is a student in the Medical Assisting program. She is a member of the Health Occupations Students of America and has served as treasurer and committee chair for the Medical Assisting National Recognition Week this school year. She has already earned her CPR Healthcare Provider certification, and after graduation in May, will sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants Certified Medical Assisting Exam. She recently competed in HOSA student competition in the Anatomy in Clay division.

Ostorga chose MNTC as her educational option as she was one year out of high school, wanting to get into the medical field. She took advantage of the CareerTech Scholarship available to high school graduates. She also saw the benefit of the college credit cooperative agreements MNTC has with Oklahoma City Community College toward a two-year associate degree of applied science. “I recommend MNTC to all my friends and family. It’s the best health-related education anyone can invest in,” she said.

After graduation from the program this May, Ostorga plans to work as a certified medical assistant, and continue her education and earn an associate degree in medical assisting.
